I was involved in a conversation with some folks recently about how “Decoration Day” has become “Memorial Day.” Being old enough to remember when and why folks used the decoration moniker for the holiday it got me thinking about its purpose. Perhaps the best way we can celebrate the day is by becoming living memorials.
Readers familiar with classic-rock music might recognize this blog’s title as a lyric from Neil Young’s timeless anthem, “My My, Hey Hey” in which Mr. Young sings, “Rock and roll will never die.” As we prepare to celebrate the Day of Pentecost this weekend I want to suggest that the King is gone but He’s not forgotten!
I have a colleague-friend who recently emailed me a question that made me think so hard that my brain hurt! Just kidding but I did have to put some real thought into the answer I gave him. The gist of the question dealt with salvation and the sense that I’m entitled.
Why are compliments such a slippery-slope for some individuals? I found myself wondering that very question this week after reading Elizabeth Bernstein’s article, “Why Do Compliments Cause So Much Grief?” in the May 4, 2010 Wall Street Journal. All I know is that when I receive a compliment I invariably say, thank you very much, I appreciate that!
